After trying to call the SEF thousands of times to get his residence permit, Jeremy Moore is now asking to be deported because he doesn’t want to be an illegal immigrant.
Jeremy Moore is a 62-year-old British citizen who has lived in Portugal since June 2021. Since arriving from the UK, he has done everything right, obtained a tax number, a bank account and bought a property. However, there is one important element that he cannot manage to obtain: a residence permit.
“To have my residency here I have to contact SEF, but when I try to call them – and I’ve tried thousands of times – they never answer the phone,” he said. Portuguese News.
This situation has become unbearable. Jeremy Moore loves Portugal, his wife is Portuguese, like his mother-in-law, and he sold his house in the UK to move to Portugal and retire, but he refuses to be in the shadow of the law. However, despite his best efforts, he cannot find a way to make an appointment or speak to SEF by phone.
“After six months of trying to sort out my residency, it’s kind of boring, because I’m trying to be a good citizen, I’m trying to do everything right, but I’ve been here over 90 days, I have crossed the line so, in other words, I am an illegal immigrant,” he said.
Asking SEF to be expelled
In an email sent to SEF, to which The news from Portugal had access, he explained his unfortunate situation and then concluded by saying that he was an illegal immigrant and should be deported. Moreover, he asks some questions to SEF: “Do you want to come and arrest me? My address is below; You have my phone number and email address, can you tell me where to come to be kicked out?; Do you want me to go to the GNR to surrender? “.
He added: “It’s very sad to come to this and my wife is very upset and doesn’t want to see me go back to the UK but I don’t want to be here as an illegal immigrant so you have the duty to expel me and send me back to my country of origin”.
In SEF’s response, they say they recognize that there is a problem within the system that needs to be fixed, which they say is a consequence of the pandemic and the growing number of citizen demands. They also say they are working to find solutions to this problem. However, SEF does not present any specific solution for this case.
An unacceptable response
“It’s a ridiculous situation. We shouldn’t accept it. We should all ask to be deported, everyone who hasn’t been granted residency. We demand to be deported, deport us! Half of the Algarve will be empty. Portugal is trying to encourage investment, it is trying to get people to come here, but they haven’t even bothered to answer the phone,” he lamented.
He believes that this lack of reaction from the Portuguese authorities is a bad announcement for Portugal. However, he still loves the country and praises the Portuguese people. “The Portuguese are not like that. Portuguese culture is about being polite, respecting others. This government body is not Portuguese, they are foreigners and they do not behave like the Portuguese”.
Jeremy Moore loves this country but wants to fix things. “I have no intention of breaking any law and I don’t want to feel unwanted in this country.” The only thing he asks for is the chance to hand over his papers and become a legal immigrant in Portugal – the country he has chosen to spend his life with his family.
