SINES, Portugal and DUBLIN, Ireland, Jan. 13, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — EllaLink, the cutting-edge fiber optic submarine cable that connects Europe to Latin America, has partnered with the recently founded company Sines Tech to support the organization of the conference “Meetings at ZILS: Sines Tech, EU-Atlantic Data Gateway Platform” which took place in Sines.

Good announcements were revealed during the conference related to major projects on data centers and submarine cables that will land in Sines – the great gateway to Europe from the Atlantic. The conference allowed a practical reflection on the current role and potential of ZILS in the implementation of the European data strategy and to create a single market for data which meets the European Union‘s global competitiveness objectives in this area by creation of the EU-Atlantic data gateway platform.

The first part of the program included a round table on “National regulations and licenses” with the presence of distinctive entities that are part of the working group for streamlining procedures and bureaucracies for projects in these areas, key aspects for the competitive positioning of Portugal. Participants include Augusto Fragoso, Chief Information and Innovation Officer at ANACOM; José Manuel Marques, Portuguese General Directorate of Natural Resources, Security and Maritime Services; and Nuno Lacasta, President of the Portuguese Environment Agency.

A major takeaway from this panel is that developers who now wish to land a new cable in Sines or start any other investment in the Sines Tech environment, will encounter an ease structure and process. All the panelists present even mentioned the importance of working with promoters from day 0 to know their expectations and be able to offer the best response.

The second part was devoted to “Submarine Cable Stations and Data Centers in Sines”, with the presence of all players in the field of submarine cables (Philippe Dumont, CEO of EllaLink; Norman Albi, CEO of Medusa Submarine Cable System; and Alberto Passos, Commercial Director at IP Telecom), and European manufacturer of submarine cables (Enrico Banfi, Alcatel Submarine Networks VP EMEA & APAC), who presented their vision of the European market and Sines. On the data center side, one of best construction companies responsible for the study Sines-certified because an ideal location for this type of structure will be present (Olivier Labbe, CEO of CAP DC).
Olivier Labbe pointed out that “Sines has it all: green energy potential – with enormous solar exposure; and availability of water due to proximity to the ocean”
also participate START Campus (Afonso Salema, CEO), who is currently prepare the ground for the construction of the first mega data center building in Sines, a project that will employ some 1,200 people.

Philippe Dumont also pointed out that the fiber optic submarine cable between Fortaleza and Sines goes beyond the direct connection between Latin America and Europe. “Since the commissioning of the cable in June, we have added the island of Madeira and Cape Verde to the network and are working to, in the near future, include an African branch that will benefit other cities on the continent”, did he declare. “For these countries, the EllaLink cable is of paramount importance to connect them to the rest of the world,” he added.

When asked how he sees the Sines tech hub ten years from now, Dumont said the trend is for Portugal to replicate the same concentration of tech companies that exists today on the eastern seaboard of the United States. States, namely in Ashburn, which houses about 100 data centers. “Sines should attract further investment in fiber optic cables and data centers for the European market,” he said.

With recent investments, ZILS has clearly positioned itself as a geostrategic prime location for digital strategy. This includes a €150m project to moor the Ellalink fiber optic data cable (https://ella.link), co-funded by the European Union and linking Europe (Sines, Portugal) to South America (Fortaleza, Brazil). In addition to this transport infrastructure, another project in the field of data storage that is complementary to this strategy of creating a digital ecosystem is the installation by ZILS of the largest data storage campus powered by renewable energies. in Europe, the START Campus (https: //www.startcampus.pt), representing an investment of 3.5 billion euros.

Sines Tech (https://sinestech.pt) offers a competitive location for the development of this ecosystem for technology companies: a high-voltage electrical network; renewable energy; water tanks (for cooling); deep-water port connectivity (for docking data cables from anywhere in the world); communication routes, geographical location and security.

the Sines Tech – Innovation and Data Center Center The community was recently founded by various public and private entities for the creation of a cluster of information and communication technologies, including the municipal council of Sines, the aicep Global Parques, the EllaLink group, Fast Fiber, the National Scientific Computing Unit of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT/FCCN Unit), IP Telecom, REN Telecom, Sines Tecnopolo and START – Sines Transatlantic Renewable @ Technology Campus. The members of this community share a vision create an open digital ecosystem where data can be made available and shared securely, in compliance with European regulations.
