Manchester United have insisted reports they may terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract are false.
Ronaldo’s frustrations were evident in his side’s performance in their embarrassing 4-0 loss to Brentford.
He left the tunnel without greeting the fans who had made the trip to west London, despite pleas from Steve McClaren.
The 37-year-old has one year left on his contract at Old Trafford, and releasing him would get him what he wants.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been pushing to leave the Red Devils all summer after their failure to qualify for the Champions League.
He missed their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia for family reasons, but upon his return held showdown talks.
That didn’t do anything to change his mind, however, and the Portuguese is keen to go elsewhere.

Ronaldo’s list of options has dwindled, however, as Chelsea and Bayern Munich ruled themselves out, while Atletico Madrid fans started a petition when rumors linked the Real Madrid great with a move.
United Stand host and talkSPORT regular Mark Goldbrige believes Ronaldo was not wrong to want to leave the club this summer as he could see this poor start to the season coming.
He told talkSPORT: “A lot of people on this show, far and wide, said we need to get rid of Ronaldo. Ronaldo is no good for United. Get rid of Ronaldo, he’s not more bigger than the club, he doesn’t want to be there.
“Maybe they’re right, maybe they’re wrong, but was Ronaldo wrong?
“Is Cristiano Ronaldo wrong to say ‘I want to leave Manchester United?’
“He had one of the most decorated careers in world football and is still a fantastic footballer.
“In June he sees United haven’t bought anyone and says he wants to go because there’s no ambition there.
“He gets slaughtered for that. We start the season, lose to Brighton, lose to Brentford overall.
“Does anyone disagree with Ronaldo now? He saw it coming, he was there last year.
“What we see as fans and media is that United are performing poorly. Ronaldo goes to work every day, trains with these players, he communicates with these players and knows their level.
“He knows what the level is at Real Madrid, at Juventus, in Portugal. He knows what a good coach is and the limits of a good coach.
“He was always respectful of Ten Hag, but Ronaldo saw it coming. He knew, no matter how good Ten Hag was, he knew this team, these players and the mentality.
“He knew it was coming.”
Another report from The Times suggests the players and coaching staff are “losing patience” with the Portugal international, with one source calling him a “walking bad temper”.
