Diego Lainez and Santiago Giménez are at the top of the list of players not selected by Gerardo Martino. Moreover, the Mexican national team coach did not include Tigres’ Jesús Angulo and Pachuca’s Erick Sánchez traveling to the World Cup in Qatar. The final list was widely criticized by media and fans.
Moreover, the Argentine coach included Roberto Alvarado, Orbelin Pineda, Rogelio Funes Mori and Raul Jiménez, the latter causing an uproar among many due to his injury and not having been cleared to play.
No Europa League star for Mexico
Santiago Giménez’s omission from the Qatar 2022 squad is one of the most controversial, given what he has achieved in his first few months with Feyenoord in the local league and also in the Europa League, where he has scored the winning goal which propelled them to the next round as group leaders.
Lainez has had less consistency with Sporting Braga, despite leaving Real Betis with that goal in mind. The winger struggled to find himself with first-team minutes, where he didn’t play enough to make an impact in the Portuguese division.
Not enough for Tata Martino and the Mexican team
Jesús Angulo and Erick Sánchez were part of the group that left Mexico for Girona, hoping to impress the coach of the Mexican national team. Yet, in the end, their efforts weren’t enough in the race to secure a spot on the Qatar 2022 roster.
Tata Martino has come under fire due to a rocky road to the World Cup and his issues with players like Chicharito and Carlos Vela. Regardless of El Tri’s performance in the World Cup, the Argentine coach will leave the team at the end of the tournament.
